The breather mesh should be put back in place as it not only filters excess cranckcase oil from coming out, but it helps to stop the small amount of dirt from entering. As for the starter , if there is smoke coming from something it's possible you have a short. Mayber the brushes in the starter ar worn or the commutator melted in one spot & the jostling of removal turned it enough so it was off of the melted spot? Just something to look at......
